WINDOWS 10

Windows does not include a system supported installation of Python. To make Python available, the CPython team has compiled Windows installers (MSI packages) with every release for many years.

Python 3.9+ supports only Windows 8.1 and newer.

Multiple versions of Python can be installed on your machine and these all use the python command. It is recommended to use the python3 command (or python3.8 to select a specific version).

The py.exe launcher will automatically select the most recent version of Python you've installed. You can also use commands like py -3.8 to select a particular version, or py --list to see which versions can be used.

INSTALLING PYTHON

• Download from Microsoft Store.
  A simple installation for an educational environment. Problems with a path length limit. The py command is not included. Admin access is not needed. Automatic updates provided.
• Download from www.python.org [the full installer].
  32-bit [old computers] vs 64-bit, the web installer vs the offline installer.
  'Install Now' option. Admin access is not needed. Python will be installed into your user directory. The standard library, test suite, launcher and pip will be installed. Shortcuts only for the current user.
  [ ] Add Python 3.x to PATH (option unchecked)
  'Customize installation' option. Admin acces needed. Python will be installed into the Program Files directory. Optional features may be selected during installation. The standard library can be pre-compiled to bytecode. Shortcuts are available for all users.
• Install Anaconda or Miniconda.
